Ray Hubbs, Sr. Obituary

Ray Hubbs, 94, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 29, 2023 after a long battle with dementia.

He contracted polio at 4 months old which caused him to need extra support for one leg.  Most people were not aware of his handicap because of his determination to not let it restrict his capabilities.

Ray was born and raised in Knoxville and graduated from Central High School.  He met, married, and started a family with Mary Lois.  In 1963 they moved their growing family from Knoxville to Morristown when he accepted employment at American Enka (BASF).  He retired from Enka in the early nineties.

He was a longtime active member at Liberty Hill Methodist Church where he enjoyed his role as caretaker and record keeper for the cemetery until he was no longer able due to the onset of dementia.

He enjoyed woodworking throughout his life and especially during his retirement years.  He was a loving father and grandfather who to quote him “always wanted to be a helper not a receiver”.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lois Hubbs; daughters, Melinda Hubbs and Kay Hubbs; parents, Elvin and Delia Hubbs; brothers, Carl, Clyde, Claude and Gene; sisters, Blanche Henderson and Sue Haag.

He is survived by his children, Hal (Elizabeth) Hubbs, Elaine Hubbs, Lisa Hubbs, Lee (Rick) Creel, Susanne (Mike) Conroy, and Leslie (Anthony) Carr; grandchildren, Will (Mollianne) Hubbs, Rylie Conroy, Heath Conroy, Brittany Creel, and Megan Creel; great-grandchildren, Cade Hubbs; along with several nieces and nephews.

A private family burial will be scheduled for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a donation to your favorite charity or food pantry.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses, can’s, therapists and caregivers who helped us care for our dad during his long battle with dementia.
